I wasn’t going to write a post on this topic, but this needs to be said.
Last week President made a decision on same sex marriage that will define his presidency from now until eternity. While there is a lot of babbling and booing over his decision, is anyone REALLY saying anything or observing the lesson here?
President Obama’s decision was strictly a political move hands down, and I have NO doubt about it. It’s a reelection year and he has to do what he can to gain supporters and stand strong against his opponents.
There is a lot of noise in the Christian community about President Obama’s decision, but will it change the votes of most African-American Christians? NOPE! In fact I believe it presents more of the same ole same ole, lots of talk and no action. Sounds familiar huh?
To set the record straight I am not an advocate of the homosexual lifestyle, nor do I agree with the lifestyle of thieves, whores, and racism. Romans 3:23-24 (KJV) tells us “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” In essence we all have sin that we are overcome daily with the denial of SELF.
What bothers me greatly about the religious is that we SEE what is going and take no REAL action to make an impact on our community and improve its’ conditions. Last month while my church (http://newlife-atl.org/) was preparing for evangelism, our Pastor Marlin Harris made a statement that has stuck me with. He said (paraphrased), “I refuse to lead a ministry that is in the midst of the community not meeting the needs of the community.” Talk about things that make you say Mmm, however he is correct.
With a church on every corner people shouldn’t be suffering and hurting if we were doing what we are supposed to do. While the world is influencing our homes, schools and churches we should be IMPACTING our homes, schools and churches, right? God has given us the AUTHORITY and POWER to do so, but as my friend Roosevelt Wright III author of Everyday HERO blog (hero44.wordpress.com) feels, ”Most Christians will probably be in a Revival or at a Women’s Conference learning “nothing” while the people we have spent wasteful hours discriminating against will be in power.” Don’t forget the prayer lines. POW! Check out his blog on the same topic.
In my observation of the gay community I’ve come to find some very important lessons we all could learn as it relates to community and taking an active part in improving the quality of life for its’ residents. Here is what I learned:
1.) Living in Atlanta I have witnessed firsthand the affects of the gay community. They stand-up for what they believe and will march on your heads if they feel you are violating their rights. Don’t play with them! LOL
2.) The gay community also recognizes strength in numbers, that’s why in most major cities in the US there is an identified “gay community” where people live, work, support and play. What would the African-American community look like if we operated in this manner?
3.) They put their money where their mouth is. If there is a cause-they support it, if there is a need-they meet it. You don’t ever see the gay community begging to support those things that matter most to them. If we invested in our communities what would streets like Crenshaw, Candler Road, Bankhead and communities like Oak Cliff (Dallas) look like?
